If you are keen on preserving and protecting the environment and are planning to purchase an electric or hybrid car in the near future, you may be worried about how you will get the vehicle charged when it runs out of power away from home. If so, consider the newly introduced WattStation by GE. This electric vehicle charger was designed by the famous industrial designer, Yves Behar. The vehicle promotes the use of non polluting electric vehicles and also involves less time for battery charging owing to the use of smart grid technology. This also helps many companies to manage the impact of these energy efficient electric vehicles on regional and local grids.

With the 24kWh battery, the number of hours required for charging the automobile battery reduces from 12-18 hours to 4-8 hours. GE has constructed charging stations at various points to facilitate easy recharging process. It is thus able to meet one of the toughest challenges posed in electric vehicles category.

It will be of great benefit to the utility companies, helping them to manage electricity demand with the setting up of charging stations at various locations. This is perhaps one of the most significant inventions from GE, which has been researching for quite sometime about how to conserve and save energy. It is one of the most remarkable innovations of the 21st century. The WattStation will hit the market in 2011, while the home version of the charger will be displayed in the latter part of this year.

In April 2010, GE has also entered into a partnership with Project get Ready, a non profit initiative piloted by the Rocky Mountain Institute, which will look into the planning and designing of the electric grids in electric vehicles. In May 2010, GE and Nissan signed a MOU to discover new technologies that will promote the smart infrastructure.
